mathsound This release really takes me back in time! I was djing in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time, and I was looking to move away from the high energy/acid/trance aI had been playing. I wanted to stay with tracks that were still “trance” but had more groove. This release, especially Water got me going in that direction.

about

When I was 18 or 19 I was still living at my parents house in Topanga. Going to raves on the weekend and attending a little bit of college at SMC.
I knew I wanted to be a part of the scene, knew I wanted to release music, but how?!?!?! One night outside astronomy class, I smoked a cigarette with an english DJ named Luke. "You know what you ought to do?" he asked. "You ought to just press the vinyl yourself, and send it out". And what seemed like an impossible mountain to climb became a reality that summer. I worked all summer at a tile shop called Malibu Ceramics. I think I was making 8 dollars an hour back then, but it was the 90s. I saved up all my money and got the first record (6 tracks, 25 minutes a side) mastered and pressed in-house at Erica Records, and excitedly took the test pressing to DJ Jimmy who worked at Groove Riders on Ventura Blvd. He listened to it for about 3 seconds and handed it back. "Its too low" he said. "Its a low pressing...". I was broken. My whole summer wasted. I did not know that the more time you squeeze onto the surface area of a vinyl record, the quieter they cut the record. So music aside, "Rithma 001" was something the DJs would never play. So.... I went back to work at the tile shop. Saved up again. Asked around and found a mastering shop somewhere in the valley called Mondophonics... with their own cutting lathe! $300 to master and cut a 12" laquer, delivered to Rainbow Records. So Rithma 002 was born. Every day after school I would wait for that call, and finally that call came. "Your test pressings are ready!" OOOOHHH the excitement of walking into that record plant to pick up my Rithma002 white labels! But when I got there, there was a problem! They would not give me the 12 copies of my record if I couldn't pay in full!!! Imagine the fear coursing through my bones when I smiled, nodded, said I would just come back later with the money, and SNUCK my very own copy of the record behind the front office and out the door!!! Desperate times sometimes call for thievery. Especially when its my own record. So it was very exciting and wild times. Eventually I paid Rainbow records to press up 300 copies, artwork and all (the symbol on the back is a tracing of some tile art from the tile shop i worked at). TRC, Beat Non Stop, InGrooves and some others picked up a handful of copies , some of which would make it up to San Francisco... specifically into the hands of Joshua (DJ IZ) who called me a few months later and said "hey, we'd like to release this Water on out own label, Tweekin". "With Remixes by myself and Kenny Hawkes"........................what a ride I was in for!!!!
